Back to “normal” life, taking a step back from globalization, hospital reform… Why doctor asked five people what was for them the most important element of the “next world”.
Loïc, 26 years old, consultant in digital transformation
“I am very attached to the notions of responsibility and justice. So, for me, the most important thing coming out of the crisis would be that we hold those responsible for the bad decisions that were taken. They have led us to nearly 30,000 dead in France, the shortage of masks, gloves and a hospital system completely on its knees.Whether members of the current government or previous ones, they would have to assume the consequences of their acts.
Then, the point that is very important to me is the implementation of telework one to two days a week in the trades where it can be introduced. It would be good if employees had this possibility. Anyway, I think this will be a solution in the coming months to respect physical distance, especially in Paris.
Finally, I would like us to realize to what extent globalization, with the principle of seeking cost reduction in all economic activities, has the ultimate goal of making the most possible gains. A country has to be able to manage itself, and there has to be some sort of shift at this level. Because, in somewhat complicated situations, each State thinks of itself: if we don’t have enough to eat, protect and treat ourselves, we are in difficulty”.
Béatrice, 53, event organizer
“For me, the priority is to regain my freedom of movement and to see the people I love without restrictions. But, more generally, I would like countries to learn a lesson from the health crisis to leave a better world. to our children. Personally, I want my daughters to be able to evolve in a more civic-minded, more reliable, more fulfilling, and safer world. This would involve becoming aware that certain things are essential.
At the level of the economy, this would result in a recentralisation, with a more national production. Not everything is negative in globalization, there are things to keep: it is exceptional to be able to exchange from a commercial, intellectual and cultural point of view. On the other hand, we saw its damage: we had almost returned to a colonialist system, with one-way transfers. We should be aware of this in order to act and become a little bit self-producing. To a certain extent, I think that the independence of countries and people would harmonize and balance the world.”
Anna, 25, financial auditor
“Several points are close to my heart concerning the ‘world after’, but, for me, the most important thing is to reform the hospital environment. My mother works in the hospital and, with the health crisis, she is in burn- She told me horrible things about healthcare workers who were on the verge of suicide, and who said that if we didn’t let them rest for a day, they would go home and hang themselves. hospital in this state is unworthy of France: it is really a shame.
More generally, I would like the country to be a little more autonomous and relocate less: we had a shortage of masks because it is China that produces them. I understand that it is more expensive to do it in France, but, in the end, it is a virtuous circle from an economic point of view. I really don’t think the lower cost policy is profitable. On a smaller scale, I would like telework to be facilitated in the company, then to find my social life before”.
Valentin, 27, energy consultant
“The environment is what matters most to me in what is called the ‘world after’. This is the first time that we have faced a health crisis of this magnitude and this is what comes closest to an environmental crisis, which we are bound to experience. We should pay more attention to our energy consumption, and, above all, to the way we consume. With the closing of borders, it is there were far fewer imports, and many products were not available on the market: I think everyone needs to understand the importance of having a certain independence.
With masks, for example, we realized that globalization was not necessarily the right option. In terms of the environment, the impacts are substantial, between transport and production methods. Everyone must record their individual energy consumption, whether primary or final. For example, when buying jeans, one should think about water, CO2 and human costs. If it was made in a factory in France, they are not too high, whereas if it was produced in China, yes; especially with assembly and transport”.
Mathilde, 27, designer
“For me, the most important thing in the ‘next world’ is that everyone takes advantage of the questioning that took place during the health crisis so as not to plunge back into the ‘metro, work to sleep’ scheme. The idea would be to lift your nose from the handlebars in search of something that fulfills you, even if it means stepping out of the mold. In my case, that means regaining my freedom to move around so that I can start traveling again.
As soon as I left school, I made the choice to practice my profession as a freelancer in order to go abroad as much as possible, but I have the impression that the health crisis has cut my wings. Before, I left for several weeks, even months, at least three times a year. However, being deprived of it made me realize that I would like to go longer than usual next time. The idea would perhaps be to alternate less the periods when I am in France and those when I go abroad to make them last longer. Exchanging with others, whether within the same country or between different cultures, seems essential to me in the ‘next world'”.
