Lipids to stop the progression of Alzheimer’s? A European research consortium has succeeded in showing that the consumption of a drink loaded with lipids makes it possible to stabilize the cognitive performance of people with pre-Alzheimer’s disease. LipiDiDiet carried out its study for 24 months, on people suffering from early symptoms of the disease. L’study is published in Lancet Neurology.
Objective effects
These people consumed Fortasyn Connect, a medical drink that contains Omega 3, a subcategory of lipids. The results showed a 45% decrease in the worsening of their CDR-SB (Clinical Dementia Rating Sum of Box), clinical assessment of dementia. This calculation is based on daily capacities: managing domestic emergencies, financial transactions, or remembering important events.
Imaging analyzes also showed a decrease in brain atrophy, with a difference of 26% for the hippocampus, and 16% of the ventricular volume. These areas are strongly linked to memory loss.
Act beyond the symptomatic effects
For Professor Tobias Hartmann, project coordinator, ” Although this nutritional intervention is not a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, it does show that the earlier we intervene in the disease, the greater the benefit to the patient. Reducing brain atrophy works more broadly, and not just on symptomatic effects, which has never been done. “If 47 million people suffer from Alzheimer’s disease, or a dementia which is close to it, there is currently no treatment to cure them.
