Food unfit for consumption. The NGO Foodwatch calls on the prefect of the Hauts de France region (North), where the Auchan group is based. Foodwatch calls for the removal of the shelves and the recall of this brand’s red lentils. Contained in cardboard packaging, these foods would be highly contaminated with mineral oils derived from hydrocarbons.
Samples taken in October 2015 on 42 products sold in supermarkets revealed that on this panel “Auchan’s red lentils […] had the highest contamination with aromatic hydrocarbons from mineral oils (Moah) “.
Other Auchan products such as Sugar Flakes cereals and Green Pouce couscous also contain a “worrying amount of MOAH”, Foodwatch assures in a statement.
In all, laboratory tests revealed the presence of MOAH in six out of ten products in France.
Alert launched in October 2015
MOAHs are toxic substances recognized as carcinogenic and endocrine disruptors by the European Food Safety Agency.
In October 2015, Foodwatch published the results of a European study on the migration of mineral oils (hydrocarbon derivatives) to food.
Problem this warning has not translated into concrete action for the health of consumers. The NGO advocated in particular for manufacturers to isolate food from cardboard with functional barriers.
Cardboard packaging, often recycled, is indeed one of the major sources of this mineral oil contamination, recalls Foodwatch.
