Hair prostheses will be better reimbursed for people who have lost their hair due to illness. The amount supported is doubled.
The end of inequalities in access to hair prostheses? The High Authority of Health (HAS) wants in any case to approach it. While 52,000 people are affected by disease-related hair loss, reimbursement for hair prostheses will be improved and better supervised. The amount supported will thus be doubled, from 125 to 250 euros.
This doubling of the reimbursement rate occurs within the framework of the 3e Cancer Plan 2014-2019. All patients with alopecia linked to a disease – whether partial or total, temporary or permanent – are affected by this measure. These are mainly people undergoing the effects of cancer treatment but also those who have suffered from alopecia areata, a disease that causes hair loss and patches of body hair.
Better quality hairpieces
The supervision will also be stricter. The National Commission for the Evaluation of Medical Devices and Health Technologies (CNEDiMTS) also requests a general practitioner or specialist to establish the prescription for hair prostheses. This will be renewable every six months.
The new reimbursement tariff is also accompanied by new requirements in terms of quality. The hand-sewn area must therefore measure at least 15 centimeters, so that the result is as close as possible to real hair. The composition and origin of the materials must also be specified.
To qualify for reimbursement, the patient must also take the time to benefit from the advice of the manufacturer. This should close the gap in access to these precious but expensive products.
