If the French watch television as much as they did ten years ago, 3 hours a day on average, the mode of consumption has changed. 40% of them watch it alone.
How do the French today consume television? This is the question answered by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee) in a study posted online on March 12. The time spent in front of the small screen has increased a lot in 25 years, but it has remained broadly stable for 10 years. However, what marks it is the evolution of the French in their way of looking at it.
TV remains the most watched screen
In 2010, in mainland France, television remained the most watched screen, with an average of three hours per day, against three quarters of an hour for domestic use of the computer. Since the two devices can be used simultaneously, the time spent in front of a screen, whether it is a television or a computer, is thus on average 3 hours 25 minutes per day.
More television for older people and more computers for younger people
The average time spent on the small screen is more or less the same for women and for men. But they spend 22 more minutes each day in front of the computer. Older people watch television the most. Younger people use the computer more: 1 hour 10 minutes for 15-19 year olds and 1 hour 12 minutes for 20-29 year olds.
Alone in front of his screen
While in the mid-1980s, watching television with the family was the rule, today 40% of French people watch it alone. True, the number of people living in this situation has also increased. However, in multi-person households, solo viewing is also on the rise. Thus, among couples with children, 17% of the time devoted to television was spent alone in 1986, 23% in 1998 and 29% in 2010. This change in practice is linked to a significant increase in the number of televisions per household. 97% of households were equipped with a television in 2010, half of them even have at least two devices in their main residence and 15% at least three devices.
Children and screens
11-14 year olds spend an average of two hours a day in front of the television and fifty minutes in front of a computer. Children from single-parent families spend more time in front of the television or in front of the computer than children from traditional families. Like their parents, they often watch her alone.
