Patients withasthma, of hay fever and D’eczema have an increased risk of developing psychiatric disorders, according to the results of a study published in the medical journal Frontiers of psychiatry.
Researchers at the Taiwan Hospital conducted a study with 200,000 patients to analyze the link between asthma, asthma, eczema and allergic rhinitis and psychological disorders.
“THE’asthma, the allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and atopic dermatitis (eczema) are among the most common allergic diseases and are nicknamed the three ‘A’s, recalls Dr. Nian-Sheng Tzeng, of Tri-Service General Hospital in Taiwan and lead author of the study. “As a clinician, I have observed that some patients with the three ‘A’s appear to be in emotional pain. Therefore, I wanted to clarify whether these allergic diseases are associated with psychiatric disorders. “
The results of the study showed that 10.8% of people with allergies developed psychiatric disorders, compared to 6.7% of people without. allergic diseases. A risk increased by 1.66 times.
“The hypothesis of the inflammatory state both present in depressive states or anxious and allergies without explaining the mechanisms, ”said Dr. Nian-Sheng Tzeng.
A closer look at the data revealed that people with atopic dermatitis had a lower risk of developing a psychiatric disorder, while people with asthma and allergic rhinitis had a higher risk. Interestingly, the team found that the use of certain asthma medications was associated with a lower risk of psychiatric disorders in asthma patients.
