A tragedy, again. The story takes place in London (England) in May 2017: a 9-year-old girl asks her dad to cook her pancakes for breakfast. Asthmatic, Nainika Tikoo is also allergic to a number of foods: she cannot consume dairy products, eggs and soy. The family therefore adapted to this somewhat special diet.
However, that morning, the little girl asks her father to put blackberries on her pancakes – she has never tasted this fruit before and wishes to discover it. From the first bite, the little girl experiences severe anaphylactic shock – an immediate, violent allergic reaction that constitutes a medical emergency. In addition, according to the French Association for the Prevention of Allergies, “in most fatal food allergic reactions, asthma is involved in 80% of cases”.
” It’s a nightmare “
“We called for help and we used the Epipen (an adrenaline auto-injector pen, editor’s note), explain the girl’s parents, Vinod and Lakshmi Kaul. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do anything: Nainika Tikoo turned blue, passed out and suffered cardiac arrest. It is a nightmare that we will relive until the end of our lives. “
“We were very attentive to the allergies and the health problems of our daughter: in the space of 9 years, we never had a major problem, we did not expect it at all. The little girl died five days after being hospitalized on May 25, 2017.
In France, food allergies affect 3.4% of the population (8% of children), or about 2 million people.
