“Sanitizers”, “purifying”, “refreshing” … Deodorants are popular. Association 60 million consumers looked at those using essential oils, known to be natural and healthier. According to their results, the reality would be quite different …
Experts from 60 million consumers analyzed 17 air fresheners with essential oils (12 in spray and 5 diffusers). They first studied the composition of the products, then the air after spraying and finally the potential risks associated with the different ingredients. As a result, the marks range from 5 to 17.5 / 20 with a rather low average of 10.8 / 20. On the podium, we find in first position the brand “Etamine du Lys”, followed by “Air Wick” with a 15/20 and “Biocoop” brings up the rear with a 14/20.
Irritating and allergenic substances
It turns out that most of these products expose the respiratory tract and the skin to allergenic and irritant molecules such as limonene, geraniol or linalool. A total of 23 unwanted ingredients were found in 2 products. However, their presence is not always indicated on the packaging … Note that these ingredients present in the bottles were not systematically found in the air after vaporization.
Some also emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in very large amounts, having a direct effect on health (the amounts vary from 5,000 to over 10,000 ug / m3!). Generally speaking, diffusers tested contain fewer unwanted ingredients but can pollute and emit as many allergens as sprays.
The association asks that allergenic substances be mentioned on the packaging (as for cosmetics) and that an indicator allows the consumer to identify those producing the least VOCs. She recommends the occasional use of these deodorants, because against indoor pollution, it is best to ventilate for at least 10 minutes a day.
