A few weeks ago a 14 year old British teenager, cancer in the terminal phase, asked the authorities of his country, the authorization to be cryogenized. In a very moving letter sent to the High Court of Justice, she explained: “I’m 14 and I don’t want to die but I know I’m going to die. I think being cryonically gives me a chance to be awakened and healed even though it’s 100 years from now. I don’t want to. to be buried underground. I know that in the future they will find a cure for the disease I am suffering from and that they will be able to cure me. I would like to have this chance “.
On October 6, the High Court therefore authorized the young girl to be the first child in Great Britain to be cryogenized. The young girl died ten days later, after learning that her wish would be granted.
The body is stored at -196 ° in liquid nitrogen
After her death, the girl’s body was transferred to the United States, to one of the two main cryo-facilities in the country: the Cryonics Institute, near Detroit. The body was slowly cooled in liquid nitrogen until it reached -196˚ C and it remains stored in a large cylinder. Treatment has been applied to the body to prevent cell deterioration, and a device called a “heart-lung resuscitator” can allow blood to flow back through the body if needed.
Note, however, that it has never been possible to revive a human or any other frozen mammal in this way.
