Better meet the needs of professionals in the sector. This is the objective of four nursing unions representing liberal workers, health establishments and national education, with the platform they are launching this Monday, May 13. In front of the “Nurse suffering”, the associations have indeed decided to create an online observatory to quantify the unease that surrounds the profession.
Under-reported suffering
Loss of meaning, impossible workload, stress, burn-out, depression, suicides … “Suffering at work in the nursing environment is extremely underreported”, explain to Franceinfo Thierry Amouroux, spokesperson for the National Union of Nursing Professionals (SNPI). The site thus does not provide a “Psychological help”, corn “Union, to identify the most frequent causes of suffering at work”, “Help a resolution” and “Assess the impact of the measures taken”, explain the organizations.
This observatory of suffering at work is ultimately based on a form system. The nurse who is faced with a difficult situation answers closed questions on the site. The statistics are then aggregated and crossed in order to address these concerns. “If it appears, for example, that there is a problem in a particular hospital, and that we have a team on site, they can go and see what is going on., indicates Thierry Amouroux. Otherwise, we can enter the Regional Health Agency (ARS). “ Moreover, if the respondent feels the need for psychological support, he can be guided to an appropriate platform.
“The impossibility of a job well done”
The reality of the profession can be illustrated by significant figures. 20% of professionals retire with a disability rate, as well as a seven-year lower life expectancy – with 78 years instead of 85 years for women. Within five years of graduating, 30% of young graduates abandon this course. Consequences linked to the arduous nature of the profession (night work, alternating hours), to which are added staff shortages and untenable rates. “Often, the problem is not medical, but linked to the impossibility of a job well done”, note the unions.
The “Psychological pressure” is also “Aggravated in recent years with the fear of assault”. In 2017, 10,800 nurses faced attacks, according to the National Observatory of Violence in the Health Environment. Or 30 caregivers per day. These fears were in particular at the origin of the strike movement which began in mid-March in the emergency room of Saint-Antoine hospital in Paris.
