In April 2018, at the age of just 53, Peter was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative condition that usually appears from the age of 65.
“He started to lose his keys, then his wallet, then he forgot words, he had trouble constructing his sentences…remembers Lisa, his wife. Our friends and relatives noticed it: that’s when I realized that something was happening, something that was going to have an impact on our lives.“
“I remember the first time he forgot about me. One day, as we were walking home, Peter gave me directions as if I were a stranger: “This is the way to my house. Turn right to go to my house”says Lisa. When we arrived, he opened the door for me and showed me around our house. It was adorable, but I was waiting for him to come back to reality… He never did.“
“Our hearts are connected”
On December 12, 2020, Lisa and Peter are comfortably installed in front of the television: a marriage on the small screen then brings tears to the eyes of the latter. “Peter started laughing and he said “let’s get married!”. It touched me a lot” recalls Lisa.
Yes, but here it is: Peter and Lisa have already been married for a dozen years. Never mind: on April 26, 2021, the couple renewed their vows. “I feel extremely lucky: Peter fell in love with me twice. I feel like a fairy tale princess.“
Despite the disease which continues to progress, Peter and Lisa therefore spin the perfect love. “I know Peter might forget me again, but that’s okay: our hearts are connected, I love him and he loves me, I don’t need to have the label of ” wife” so that we are happy. We will stay together until the end: no one, not even illness, will separate us.“A beautiful message of hope…
