Periodontitisis a gum disease caused by bacteria that infect the tissues around the teeth, leading to inflammation of the gums. Eventually, the bacteria can damage the bone that supports the teeth and they can fall out. In addition, periodontitis increases the risk heart attack orstroke.
In search of an innovative treatment, a multidisciplinary team of researchers from Japan and the United States studied antimicrobial properties silicon nitride, a ceramic that has the property of degrading the nuclei of bacterial cells. They noted that after just six days of exposure to the material, it altered the metabolism of Porphyromonas gingivalis, the species of bacteria primarily responsible for periodontitis.
Although more studies are still needed, the results show silicon nitride shows promise in the treatment of serious gum disease.
