the Washington post tells the unusual story of a Californian, long laughed at for his big beer belly, who actually had … a huge tumor in his belly.
“I’ve always been a stout person“testifies the patient to the American newspaper. He was therefore not immediately alarmed by his additional weight gain … until he realized that his legs and arms seemed to shrink compared to his belly, more and more problems with transit, pain and breathing difficulties are added to this.
The 47-year-old is often carted on his beer belly, but his abdomen begins to become unusually hard and heavy. He then decides to consult a doctor. Results ? Retroperitoneal liposarcoma. A rare cancer that forms in soft tissue.
Patient’s health, intact after extraction
Doctors cannot say when the giant tumor started to form, or why … The operation simply reveals the size of the growth: 35 kilos. Much more important than the classic cases of liposarcomas. Almost none of the patient’s organs were affected, which facilitated the extraction.
If the highest risk of this operation is blood loss due to the removal of the lump, the patient’s intervention went well. He did not need chemotherapy, just regular monitoring to prevent the return of a tumor, a common occurrence in this type of cancer.
