The French are mainly complexed by their body. However, they believe that this is not a barrier to please.
Small flaws and imperfections can enhance a person’s charm. However, many French people still report feeling self-conscious about their physique. Some go to great lengths to conceal parts of their body.
This is what reveals a survey, conducted by the Yougov Institute on behalf of the dating site Meetic. 1,016 people representative of the adult French population took part in this online survey on December 8 and 9. Almost 7 out of 10 participants say they feel complex about their image.
Faults and concealment strategies
Their fears are particularly about the appearance of their stomach, since almost 4 in 10 people believe that it is too round. Love wrists and nose size also top the list of complexes. 29% of women are also likely to criticize the size of their thighs (compared to only 4% of men)
In general, the difference between the responses of women and those of men is significant. The latter are overall more satisfied with their physical appearance and their build than women, according to the survey.
Another notable difference is that more women say they hide their physical defects on a daily basis, especially during a date. Three quarters thus hide the part of the body that they do not appreciate before meeting a potential conquest, while men in this case are only 40%.
And the French don’t just fake their “real life” appearance. A third of Internet users also modify their profile picture on social reasons, in order to appear in their best light.
Despite these small worries, good news: more than one in two French people believe that despite their imperfections, they can please and find love. Complexes which therefore do not affect the trust capital that much.
Britons who are just as unconfident
Equally pervasive in the UK is women’s lack of confidence in their physique. According to a survey conducted by the Weight Watchers group, women self-criticize an average of eight times a day, and at least once before 9:30 a.m.
The weight, the hairstyle, the fact of feeling badly dressed or unattractive compared to his colleagues were cited as the main factors of dissatisfaction for these women.
Nine out of ten women revealed that they always complimented the other women around them, but that they were never satisfied with themselves.
