January 19, 2001 – According to a four-week study of 172 people with osteoarthritis, homeopathic gel is as effective in relieving pain as piroxicam gel, a topical non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.
The study was published in the very serious medical journal Rheumatology, in July 2000. The patients all suffered from osteoarthritis of the knee, confirmed by an x-ray. They had to apply one gram of gel, 3 times a day for 4 weeks and did not know if they were applying the homeopathic gel or the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug.
At the end of the research which took place at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital, the researchers concluded that the homeopathic gel (Triflora Gel, from Boericke & Tafel) was at least as effective as the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug but that it was also possible that the pain reduction was greater in the group using homeopathic treatment. They believe that this gel, along with a simple pain reliever if needed, is a valid treatment option for people with osteoarthritis.
