A study led by researchers from Harvard University (USA) reveals that the consumption of one to two cans of soda, fruit juice or energy drinks per day considerably increases the risk of die prematurely of cardiovascular disease. A risk that particularly affects women, according to this study which has just been published in the medical journal Traffic.
A 63% increased risk in women
“Previous studies have shown strong links between the consumption of sugary drinks and weight gain, type 2 diabetes, as well as other cardiovascular conditions such as strokes”, said Dr. Vasanti Malik, lead author of the study. This new study shows that, compared to women consuming one soda per month, those who drink 2 cans per day have a 63% increased risk of premature death from cardiovascular disease. In men, the increased risk is 29%. The risk of death from cancer increases by 18%.
The researchers also examined the effects of sweetener drinks. “Substituting one sugary drink per day with a diet drink has been found to reduce the risk of premature death, but drinking 4 diet sodas again increases the risk of premature death from cardiovascular disease in women” the researchers point out.
For this study, Harvard researchers analyzed the medical records of 80,647 women and 37,716 men.
