The tobacco control keep on going. After setting up the neutral packages, the Minister of Health Marisol Touraine wants to ban the names of cigarettes or cigars that are too attractive or glamorous.
More marketing for cigarette brands
The brands of Vogue, Fine, Allure and Corset cigarettes will therefore be prohibited for sale, such as Café crème, Paradiso and Punch cigars and cigarillos. Tobacco manufacturers will have a period of 1 year for cigarettes and 2 for cigars to either change their name or withdraw the products concerned from sale.
Likewise, the minister will ban the use of adjectives such as Slim, references to aromas, and enhancing concepts such as biodegradable, natural or organic.
All these measures will be ratified by an official decree which will be published on February 1, 2017.
“There are brands which will no longer be authorized, brands which are attractive, which give the feeling that smoking these cigarettes is chic, which is obviously not the spirit of the neutral package”, affirmed this morning the Minister of Health Marisol Touraine, on RTL.

The price of roll-your-own tobacco on the rise
The Minister also announced an increase in the price of roll-your-own tobacco. On RTL’s antenna, she also announced that this increase would be “variable, around 1.50 euros, as provided for in the Social Security financing plan. For cigarettes, tax increases had been voted, but companies did not pass them on, so prices will remain more or less stable, ”she regretted.
In fact, it is the tobacco companies, and not the State, who decide on retail prices. These amounts must be validated by the government, which is concerned that they are not lower than the cost price and all taxes. “The increases will come later since manufacturers have circumvented the rules which should lead to an increase in the price. I will not give up because increasing the price of tobacco is important in terms of public health, ”the Minister recalled on RTL.
