Asthma is a chronic inflammation of the bronchi which results in seizures and respiratory discomfort of varying degrees of intensity. According to the latest estimates, it affects 4 million French people, or 6 to 7% of adults and 10% of children. In 80% of cases, the disease is of allergic origin and attacks are triggered by allergens. To better control their disease, asthmatics are therefore advised to define what triggers these crises the better to avoid them.
If the current treatments (corticosteroids and bronchodilators mainly) work for the majority of asthmatics, some forms of severe asthma are more difficult to treat. Asthma, however, cannot be cured, although many scientific studies point to new research that can lead to curative treatments.
In addition, air pollution and passive smoking are considered to be partly responsible for the increase in the number of asthmatics observed in recent years.
