Retirement would be excellent for your health, according to the results of a study published in the medical journal Preventative Medicine. This period of life was promoting better sleep, more physical activity and even thesmoking cessation.
Researchers from the University of Sydney (Australia) have studied the life changes of retirees and published a study which affirms that these seniors increased their physical activity by an average of 93 minutes per week. And that they reduced their idle time by 67 minutes.
“A major life change like retirement presents a great opportunity to make positive life changes. It’s a great time to let go of bad habits and create new, healthier ones” , comments Dr. Melody Ding, in charge of the study.
Take the time to take care of yourself
During this period, scientists have also observed that seniors slept better and 11 more minutes a day and taking control of their health. 50% of retired women quit smoking.
“This is a good time to talk with the doctor about lifestyle changes to extend lifespan,” adds Dr. Ding. “These findings demonstrate that healthcare professionals and policy makers need to think about developing special programs for retirees to capitalize on their health transition throughout retirement.”
