Yes: bleach is effective against the SARS-Cov-2 coronavirus. This is what the General Directorate of Health (DGS) affirms, which recommends regularly disinfecting surfaces potentially infected by the coronavirus: door handles, switches, touch screens… But, should it really be emphasized, the disinfectants are reserved for inert surfaces and should never be used on humans or animals. Needless to say, doctors’ hair stood on end when they heard Donald Trump suggest injections of disinfectant to cure coronavirus!
Bleach is a disinfectant molecule that cannot be used pure: it is necessary to dilute the product in water before using it on floors and domestic surfaces: worktops, tables, etc. But beware, that effective against the coronavirus, bleach (which is bactericidal, virucidal and fungicidal) can be dangerous if misused. Here are the tips to follow for safe use:
Bleach needs to be diluted
Dilution (in the case of bleach with 2.6% active chlorine, it is written on the label) follows a rule of 1 for 4: in a bucket of 1 L of water, we will dilute as follows 250 mL bleach. And a 1 L bottle of bleach will prepare 4 L of disinfectant.
Bleach requires protection
When used at home, bleach must be subject to specific protection: gloves and (if possible) goggles are worn, the room is well ventilated, and we do not forget to Rinse the cleaned surfaces well, especially if they come into contact with food – for example: when cleaning the fridge or worktop.
Attention : bleach can only be used alone – there is no question of making mixtures with potentially disastrous consequences for health!
The worst idea? Mix bleach + white vinegar: the result is toxic fumes that are harmful to the lungs.
Bleach: the emergency actions to know
- In the event of toxic fumes (after a bleach + vinegar mixture, for example), ventilate the room, move away, rest, and telephone the nearest poison control centre.
- If bleach is ingested, call the nearest Poison Control Center: do not make the person vomit!
- If bleach gets in your eyes or on your skin, wash thoroughly with clean water for 10 minutes – no less. Monitor and consult a doctor immediately if the burning sensation persists.
Any last advice? Keep your bottle of bleach out of reach of children and remember to label the bottle correctly so as not to confuse!
