Among adolescents, homophobic violence is the leading cause of suicide. This rate soars when we consider certain very precarious people such as trans people for example. Main reasons: insults, violence and discrimination. It was after drawing up this painful observation that the Inter-LGBT association (Interassociative lesbian, gay, bi and trans) decided, on the occasion of National Suicide Prevention Day, to launch a shocking poster campaign . “Lesbian, gay and trans people commit suicide on average 4 times more than the rest of the population, not because of who they are but because of what they go through on a daily basis!” underlines the association. The latter also asks the Minister of Social Affairs and Health, Marisol Touraine, to provide a precise assessment of the actions implemented since 2013.
16% of deaths between 15 and 24 years old
The minister installed a National Suicide Observatory in September 2013, to give the public authorities the means to act as far upstream as possible and to prevent suicide, with all the players concerned. Published last December, the first report of this observatory indicates that between the ages of 15 and 24, suicide represents 16% of all deaths and is the second cause of death among young people after traffic accidents. In addition, each year, approximately 70,000 people are hospitalized for attempted suicide (TS) outside the psychiatric department. These are theyoung girls aged 15 to 19 which have the highest hospitalization rates (43 per 10,000 per year).
