The only Ferrari 400i limousine on the road in the United States never ceases to make the news. Put on sale last November, it has just changed hands again. The 310 hp 4.8 V12 Italian sold for $52,800, or 2.5 times more than during the previous transaction.
At the end of January 2022, the American house Barrett-Jackson organized a spectacular auction in Scottsdale where the 1,857 vehicles on offer have all been sold for a record amount of 195.9 million dollars, or approximately 174 million euros. Among the exceptional lots (Porsche Carrera GT, Ford GT, Mercedes 300 SL, very first Corvette Z06…), some curiosities were invited like this unique Ferrari 400i limousine.
A fuel-injected V12
Few details have been released on this 6-seater model. Under the hood, we find the original 4.8 V12. It is the same block as the 400, the only difference comes from the passage to a K-Jetronic injection instead of carburettors, hence the name “i”. During the operation, the power was reduced by 30 hp to peak at 310 equines. The limo also retains its General Motors three-speed automatic transmission. At the time, it was the first model to receive a transmission of this type. The passenger compartment has been dressed in two-tone cream/grey leather. The seats are adorned with the Cavallino.
The Ferrari that we tear off?
During the Barrett-Jackson sale, the “2+4” GT was sold for $52,800, or approximately €46,728. The new buyer was undoubtedly caught up in the fervor of the American auctions, because last November, this same model changed hands for only $20,000, or 2.5 times less! In any case, he leaves with a piece of history (several meters long). Did you know that the 400, in its 2+2 version, was notably made to invest in the juicy American market? Designed by Pininfarina in 1979, the Ferrari 400 will be available in less than 1,900 units, including 1,306 with injection engine. Considered as “grand tourism in evening dress”, it is doubtful that this Ferrari 400i Limousine would have been to the taste of Enzo, Il Commendatore.
