In May do what you please! Did this saying presage that May was also the best month to be born? Indeed, the babies born at this time are in better health than the others. On the other hand, those who celebrate their birthday in October would develop chronic, respiratory and neurological diseases.
Researchers from Columbia University in the United States studied the medical records of 1.7 million people born between 1900 and 2000 and correlated the date of birth and the risk of developing certain diseases.
The conclusions of this study put forward a link between the date of birth and 55 diseases and revealed that being born in May would reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases while pointing the tip of one’s nose in October increased it.
The researchers also observed a relationship between the month of birth and nine types of heart disease. People born in March are at the highest risk for atrial fibrillation, heart failure, and disorders of the mitral valve (the heart valve that separates the left atrium from the left ventricle.
They also noticed that babies born in October and November suffered more from respiratory diseases and sexual or neurological diseases. Asthma would develop more easily in children born in July and October and attention deficit disorders with or without hyperactivity affect those born in November.
These new data are consistent with previous research on the link between disease and month of birth. A Danish study found that babies with asthma’s peak risk was highest during the months of May and August when Denmark’s sunshine levels were similar to New York’s in the July and October period.
“These data could help scientists discover new risk factors for disease,” said Nicholas Tatonetti, assistant professor in biomedical informatics. “It’s important not to get too nervous about these results because, although we found significant links, the overall risk of disease is not that great. The risk related to the month of birth is relatively low when compared to other influencing variables such as diet and exercise.
