A case meningitis deadly in Brittany. Five-year-old girl died after contracting invasive meningococcal type B infection. Hospitalized Tuesday in Brest hospital, the girl succumbed to the disease, reports the regional daily Ouest-France. The young victim was educated in a nursery class at the Yves-Riou public school in the small town of Pouldergat, near Douarnenez (Finistère). The announcement of his death sparked a stir among those around him. “We organized a kind of crisis unit for the little ones and their parents, in order to understand and discuss what happened, alongside the director, the doctor, the nurse and the school psychologist. “explained Gaby Le Guellec, the mayor of the town, interviewed by Ouest-France.
As a precaution, the Regional Health Agency contacted about sixty people who would have been in contact with the girl the last ten days. They were prescribed an antibiotic.
Invasive meningococcal type B infection remains rare : six cases per 100,000 inhabitants, according to Ouest-France.
A high fever that is poorly tolerated, and / or one or more red or purplish spots (purpura) can signal an invasive meningococcal infection, recalls the Ministry of Health. If there is the slightest doubt, you must urgently contact 15 or its attending physician.
