According to a study conducted by the Research Center for the Study and Observation of Living Conditions (Credoc) for the food giant Mondelez International, nearly 4 out of 10 French people have become accustomed to snacking.
4 in 10 French people nibble
Small morning break with a coffee, afternoon snack, aperitif dinner … There are many opportunities to snack in a day and the French do not deprive themselves. This is what emerges from a study by Credoc, revealed by our colleagues from Parisian. According to this work, 38% of French people nibble, against 20 to 30% in 2010. Snacking is a habit that is therefore becoming increasingly popular.
But why do we snack? “ For pleasure ”, According to 38% of those questioned. 28% do it to stop their hunger and 17% simply to decompress. And this habit does not make them feel guilty at all: 86% of them nibble without regret. In total, 34.4% of French people take a snack break in the morning, 43.5% have an afternoon snack and 22.5% replace dinner with an extended aperitif.
A bad habit despite everything
Corn ” Unlike the Anglo-Saxons, for whom snacking throughout the day has become the main mode of food, the French do not neglect traditional meals at the table which are so many moments of conviviality. », Specifies Thibaut de Saint Pol, co-author of this first Snacking Observatory, in the columns of the Parisian. This does not mean that this practice should not be denounced..
Indeed, snacking mostly consists of eating fatty, salty or sweet foods. We rarely nibble on carrots or pieces of cucumber … But cakes, crisps, cheese and cold meats are not recommended foods to stay healthy. Consumed in large quantities, they can increase the risk of obesity or cardiovascular disease.
