How did they get hold of a vial of electronic cigarette ? And bring her into their establishment?
This is the central question surrounding this strange affair, to say the least. Indeed, according to the firefighters of Cavaillon in the Vaucluse, 13 children aged 6 to 8 were poisoned following inhaling a vial of an electronic cigarette in their primary school in Ratacans. “After medical regulation, it was judged that the children would not all be transported (to the hospital) and that they would be placed under the supervision of their teacher.“the firefighters told AFP.
In high doses, nicotine can be fatal
Moreover, two of them who complained about headache had to be hospitalized for control. Still according to the firefighters, “headaches are linked to nicotine concentration levels“. Other cases of inhalation poisoning in children had already been documented: indeed, according to a 2014 American study published in Tobacco Control, the nicotine concentration of the refill products is generally higher than the lethal dose in children (10 mg) and in adults (30-60 mg / ml). For example, a 5 ml vial with a concentration of 20 mg / ml of nicotine therefore contains 100 mg of nicotine! Fortunately, the few cases of accidental ingestion only resulted in a few minor symptoms (nausea, vomiting, tachycardia).
Little knowledge of other products
In his 2014 report on electronic cigarettes, the High Council of Public Health (HSCP) indicated that apart from nicotine, the other products contained in the e-cigarette would be weakly toxic, adding that nevertheless, “the long-term toxicity of propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin and synthetic flavors, etc. is not or little documented“. Especially since there is a”vagueness surrounding the production channels for e-cigarette “liquids” and the lack of European or national labeling or certification for this product, which is now massively consumed“.
It is therefore better not to leave refill products, or any other potentially toxic product, within the reach of children!
