The battery of the electric bicycle is also called the heart of the electric bicycle. Not so crazy! The battery supplies the power to your motor, which you use to enjoy cycling with the pedal assistance.
If you take good care of your battery, your battery can last longer. However, you cannot prevent the capacity from decreasing over time. On average, the battery of an e-bike lasts about 5 years.
In this article you can read our 10 tips to increase the life of your battery.
What does a battery do for an electric bicycle?
A battery – or battery – is super important with an electric bicycle. The battery supplies the motor with energy. This engine helps you move forward. This battery can run out when you go cycling. It is therefore important that you always put your battery on the charger. Basically the same idea as the battery in your phone, laptop or tablet.

10 tips to increase the life of your battery
Read the user manual carefully
Have you bought an electric bicycle? Read the user manual of your bicycle battery carefully. The user manual contains tips especially for your type of battery. So read these tips carefully and follow them. The manufacturer of your specific battery knows best how the lifespan of the battery can be increased.
Label charger
Do several people in your house have an electric bicycle? Then they all have an e-bike charger. These chargers are (unfortunately) all similar. It is wise to label your own e-bike charger. This way you can be sure that you are using the right charger for the right battery. You can damage the battery if you use the wrong battery. That would be a waste!
Don’t look for extreme temperatures
The temperature outside has a major influence on the condition of your battery. If it freezes, the capacity will temporarily decrease. This is not a disaster if it happens occasionally. However, the battery can be damaged if it is exposed to extremely low temperatures or extremely high temperatures for a long time.
Be careful when storing your battery
Are you going to store your battery for a longer period of time in, for example, your shed? Then make sure that your bicycle battery is charged. We recommend that you store your bicycle battery when it is at least 50 percent charged.
If your battery is empty, a deep discharge can occur. When deeply discharged, it is no longer possible to charge your battery. Replacement is therefore necessary in this case. Also useful to know: with a deeply discharged battery you have the chance that the warranty will lapse (see the warranty conditions of your bicycle battery).
Remove bicycle battery
For example, do you arrive at work after a ride on your e-bike? Then take the battery of your bike inside (if possible of course). Do this also if your bicycle is carried on a bicycle carrier on your car.
Is it not possible to disconnect the battery on your e-bike and take it with you? Try to store your bike indoors as much as possible. This prevents your bicycle battery from being exposed to low temperatures, high temperatures or precipitation. You can also order a protective cover for your battery. For example, take a look at the Fahrer Battery Protective Cover – Universal – Tube.
Do not empty the battery
Did you know that you should not completely empty your bicycle battery? In the Netherlands you will find several charging points for e-bikes. During your bike ride, take your charger with you and try to make a stopover. This way your battery lasts longer!
Pedal assistance when starting off
Switch off your pedal assistance if you want to start from a standstill or choose the lightest gear. Driving away from a standstill consumes a lot of energy in a short time.
Charging and Discharging
To extend the life of your battery, it is important that you keep the battery in good condition. You do this by regularly charging and discharging your battery. By regularly we mean at least once a month!

Drying contacts
Is the rain pouring down from the sky and did you shelter from the rain somewhere during your bike ride? Perhaps you have removed your bicycle battery. First dry your contact point before you replace your bicycle battery. Otherwise it is possible that your bicycle battery has a short circuit.
Correct tire pressure
Low tire pressure means high rolling resistance. So make sure your tire pressure is correct. If you ensure that your bicycle tires are at the maximum pressure, then your battery is using as little unnecessary energy as possible. By maximum tire pressure we mean 3.5 to 4 bar!
