YouTube was experimenting with the picture-in-picture mode in iOS, but has decided to stop.
Many users of the ‘picture-in-picture’ functionality were enthusiastic. YouTube started testing nine months ago and has now decided to pull the plug. The feature allowed you to watch a video while using another app. Other competing apps have been doing this for a while and the feature is loved there.
YouTube turns off popular iOS feature
The streaming service enabled PiP on iOS as an “experimental” feature for the app in August 2021. By April 2022, it appears that YouTube has decided the feature isn’t worth keeping. The experimental feature, previously visible on the YouTube.com/New page, has been removed from view. There is also no option to enable or disable the feature in the app, as the website states that it is “disabled”.
Some users can still use it even though it is disabled. The website 9to5Google says that some users who have enabled the feature before will still be able to enjoy PiP, at least until the app disables it completely.
Premium
Not all YouTube users were able to use Picture-in-Picture as it has only been available for . since its launch in 2021 Premiumsubscribers. It was expected that if the premium users used it a lot, it might be rolled out to the free version. The reason why YouTube turned off the feature is unknown. Many premium users are not happy with it, it was something extra that you get with a paid subscription.
