Sitting all day is bad for your health. To counter the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle, working while standing for at least 2 hours a day is recommended.
Sitting all day is slowly killing you. A sedentary lifestyle adopted almost by force by office work. Cardiovascular disease, weight gain, sluggish physical activity, back pain are the health consequences of a sedentary lifestyle. However, to fight against a sedentary lifestyle, it is enough to work standing for at least 2 hours a day, recommends for the first time Great Britain.
“Office workers spend 65 to 75% of working hours seated, it’s an accumulation of extended periods,” write the authors of these recommendations published this Tuesday, June 2 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
Standing 4 hours at work
These recommendations, drawn up by a group of international experts, go even further. They estimate that the number of hours spent standing could reach 4 hours per day and that it will be necessary to install desks allowing to work while standing to avoid sitting on a chair for too long. In other words, everything must be done so that employees alternate between sitting and standing.
For authors, working standing and moving from time to time, such as walking in the corridors of the company or answering the phone while walking, will take an increasingly important place in the days of employees. A change in behavior that has already become a habit in some large American companies like Facebook or Google.
