Women have experienced a greater increase in deaths than men, + 3% against + 1.4%, specifies INSEE in its vital statistics on deaths in 2008, presented on December 23. All sexes combined, the increase was 2.1% compared to the previous year.
The number of deaths in 2008 was almost the same as in 1998, 542,575 against 543,409. It had been on the rise since 2006.
In 2008, 277,495 males died compared to 265,080 females. Yet it is women who show the largest increase in deaths.
