According to a new studytransgender women who had a uterus transplanted would clearly gain in quality of life.
The research, conducted among 182 transgender women using a 27-point questionnaire, is clear: 90% of respondents believe that uterus transplantation could alleviate their discomfort with their biological sex.
Desire for a child
Going into more detail: Most transgender women had no children before they transitioned (92%) and expressed a desire to have children in the future (94%). Additionally, many agreed that being able to procreate (94%) and have menstruation (88%) would improve perceptions of their femininity. Similarly, the majority of respondents believe that transplanting a functional vagina would improve their sex life (90%), their overall quality of life (90%) and help them feel more like a woman (92%). Finally, more than three-quarters of respondents (77%) said they would be more inclined to save their sperm if uterus transplantation became a realistic option.
“Evaluate the feasibility of this procedure”
“This report on transgender women’s desire for uterine transplantation encourages further research in animal and cadaveric models, necessary to assess the feasibility of this procedure,” conclude the authors. In the United States, the accession of two transgender women (Sarah McBride and Rachel Levine) to important and high-profile positions has led more and more researchers to take an interest in their health.
