Why do I always get heartburn after eating a banana? I am a 58-year-old man, otherwise healthy.
I’ve never heard of that. Foods that cause heartburn interfere with peristalsis (the squeezing movement of the gastrointestinal tract). This is usually because it is too fat. Sometimes it concerns substances that do something with your nervous system, such as coffee, tea, alcohol, chocolate and nicotine. Very acidic things (fruit, wine, soft drinks) can also cause complaints. I can’t imagine anything with a banana.
Gastric acid
A banana mainly consists of water, some carbohydrates, sugars and fiber, and the vitamins and trace elements that make it so healthy. Bananas are even advised as a home remedy for heartburn. You may be slightly allergic to one of the ingredients in bananas. Allergy to bananas occurs. Allergy is often accompanied by the release of histamine, which is another substance that stimulates the production of stomach acid. If you have never suffered from heartburn, the easiest solution is to stop eating bananas.
