– The average age of people with diabetes treated pharmacologically was 65.1 years in 2009 (1)
– The prevalence of pharmacologically treated diabetes was higher in men (6.4%) than in women (4.5%), at the same age, in 2009.
– In 2009, significant geographical variations in the prevalence rates of pharmacologically treated diabetes (at equal age and sex) were observed with particularly high rates in the overseas departments (e.g. Réunion: 8.8%), high in the North and the North East (Nord Pas de Calais: 5.4%) and rather weak in the West of the metropolis (Brittany: 3%).
– Cost of diabetes treatment (reimbursement by health insurance): 6.7 billion euros in 2010, two thirds of which are linked to the treatment of complications (2013 Health insurance expense and income report).
– 81% of diabetics are on medication (oral antidiabetics and insulin).
– Amount reimbursed for antidiabetics (oral and insulin) in 2009: € 717 million (2)
