WhatsApp limits the possibilities for forwarding messages to other users. A message that has been forwarded five times can now only be sent to one contact at a time.
The update will help WhatsApp in the fight against the spread of misleading information. Earlier, the company announced that it is testing a new feature that can verify the trustworthiness of a source.
On WhatsApp, forwarded messages are marked at the top with an arrow and the text ‘forwarded’. The message has been forwarded more than five times when two arrows are visible. WhatsApp does this to indicate that the message did not originally come from your contact.
The restriction is not only intended to prevent the dissemination of misleading information. Due to the many forwarding, these messages are much less personal than the messages that are normally sent. With the introduction of a limit, WhatsApp hopes to remain a reliable service for private conversations, because personal contact is important in these times.
