Several studies have already shown significant links between lack of sleep and the risk of cardiovascular disease or stroke. But British researchers suggest that a good night’s sleep is not enough to reduce this risk. There would indeed also be an optimal time to fall asleepwhich would be associated with a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
After collecting the sleeping and waking times of 88,000 participants aged 37 to 73 equipped with a connected watch for 7 days and following their heart health for more than 5 years, the researchers were able to determine that the The “ideal” time to fall asleep is between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m.
Reduce risk by 25%
“Specifically, those who fall asleep at midnight or later, especially women, have a 25% higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease, while those who fall asleep before 10 p.m. have a 24% increased risk. ” explain the researchers of the UK Biobank in the journal European heart journal.
The latter suggest that the disruption of the circadian rhythm is an insufficiently taken into account risk factor in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. “This dysregulation of the circadian rhythm is associated with high blood pressure, reduced sleep quality, increased risk of cardiovascular disorders, and can also stimulate atherosclerosis, increasing cardiovascular risk” insist the British scientists.
