Selfies, videos, games, social networks, video calls… 65% of young French people behave dangerously when using a car, motorbike, scooter, bicycle or scooter.
- 3 out of 4 young French people (75%) are aware of the danger that using a smartphone when travelling represents for themselves and others.
- However, 2 out of 3 young people (65%) have already done so.
- This year, the mortality rate among 18-24 year-olds who are victims of road accidents has started to rise again.
According to a new barometer of theIpsos and some Macifthe majority of 16-30 year olds travel by consulting their smartphone instead of being focused solely on the road, thus endangering their health and that of others.
1 in 3 young people have already taken a photo or filmed themselves while riding a two-wheeler
Nearly a third of young users of two-wheelers (30%), scooters (35%), bicycles (32%) and cars (21%) have already filmed or photographed themselves while driving.
“2 out of 3 young people (65%) have already made a phone call, taken part in telephone meetings for work, sent or read text messages/emails, watched films/series, played games, took selfies/videos or consulted social networks while travelling by car, motorbike, scooter or bicycle”, also detail the authors of the survey.
Impatience plays a major role in all these risky behaviors. “A quarter (27%) of young people who use their smartphone while on the move admit that they cannot resist the call of notifications, and 28% of those who watch films and series while on the move say they do so because “it can’t wait”” the report states.
The final paradoxical element of the survey: 3 out of 4 young people (75%) are aware of the danger that using a smartphone when travelling represents for themselves and for others.
Road accidents: 291 deaths in June 2024
This year, the mortality rate among 18-24 year-olds who are victims of road accidents has started to rise again: 529 young adults have died in the last 12 months in mainland France.
“It is estimated that 291 people died in June 2024 on the roads of metropolitan France compared to 286 in June 2023, an increase of +2%. We note in particular a sharp increase in the number of deaths in passenger vehicles (+26 deaths) and on foot (+5 deaths)”complete the National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory.
In a head-on collision in a road accident, the injuries that put the occupants’ life at risk are mainly those affecting the thorax and the head. “Disabilities are mainly due to brain and lower limb injuries” complete INRS (National Institute for Research and Safety).
“In the event of a violent impact, the significant deceleration can cause serious organ damage with internal bleeding as well as trauma to the cervical vertebrae. This happens even with safety equipment (airbag, seat belt)”, ends the institute.
