Getting ready for school can be more enjoyable with games and fun activities.
Starting school is a big step that goes better when it is prepared thoughtfully. Some simple games and fun activities can be practiced during the summer before the start of the school year to ease the transition.
Developing social and emotional skills
Before entering school, it is important for children to learn how to interact positively with others. Role-playing, such as playing “shopkeeper” or “classroom,” allows them to practice problem-solving and cooperation. Children learn to take turns, share ideas, and express emotions appropriately.
Picture books that explore a variety of emotions are also helpful. As you read, ask questions like, “How do you think this character is feeling?” or “What would you do in this situation?” This encourages your child to think about their own emotions and reactions, which will also help them better understand the emotions of others.
Developing cognitive skills
Simple games like puzzles, memory games, and construction games (Lego, Kapla) can strengthen concentration, memory, and problem-solving skills.
Sorting and counting activities also help develop basic math skills and logical thinking. For example, have your child sort buttons by color or size, or count the number of objects in a room.
Developing your autonomy and self-confidence
Encouraging your child to make decisions and solve problems independently can build their confidence. Simple activities like getting dressed, preparing a small meal, or putting away toys are all opportunities to encourage independence.
Building, drawing, or modeling games are great for promoting independence. They allow children to explore their creativity and make decisions about the design and creation of their projects.
Finally, get into the habit of talking to your child about his day, listening to his concerns, and valuing his efforts and successes. A child who feels supported and encouraged will develop a positive self-image and will be more comfortable facing new challenges.
