The Minister of Health Olivier Véran took the decision, Friday July 31, to allow the prefects to make it compulsory to wear a mask outside. A trend that is spreading in the territory, where the coronavirus is still circulating.
- More and more prefects are making it compulsory to wear a mask outside.
- Mayenne, Lille and Nice are particularly concerned.
In addition to the compulsory wearing of masks in enclosed public places, more and more prefects are generalizing this practice in French streets (to find out about all the agglomerations concerned, Click here).
Obligation
The prefecture of Mayenne, for example, indicated that wearing a mask is now compulsory in 69 municipalities, within “all public places (public thoroughfares, open-air public spaces) within the perimeter delimited by the entry and exit signs of the towns concerned.”
From this Monday, August 3, the city of Lille also imposes the wearing of a mask in the busiest districts. On its site, the town hall specifies: “from Monday August 3, the wearing of a sanitary mask, for those over 11 years old, already compulsory in closed public spaces (rooms, shops, restaurants, bars, etc.), the markets of the City and recommended in all circumstances where the physical distance of 1 meter cannot be guaranteed, becomes mandatory in the following places:
· Areas characterized by high public traffic;
· Pedestrian zones, permanent or temporary;
· ‘Meeting areas’ where road traffic is limited to 20 km/h (Grand Place and streets indicated on the map);
· Shopping malls, similar spaces and adjoining parking spaces of large and medium-sized commercial surfaces;
· Open-air markets;
· Areas and surroundings, including parking spaces, mobility and transport infrastructure (stations, metro, bus stations, airports, aerodromes);
· Urban green spaces (parks, gardens and landscaped areas along waterways).”

As Christian Estrosi had promised, the city of Nice is also making the mask compulsory in the streets, probably at the level of the Promenade des Anglais.
incentive
More generally, Olivier Véran encourages wearing a mask outdoors depending on the situation: “Sif you are in a street where there are several people going for a walk and you are not sure if you can keep the distance, I recommend it”says the Minister of Health.
A new study recently supported this government initiative. Published in the JAMA, it demonstrates that wearing a mask significantly reduces the rate of SARS-CoV-2 infection, even if the protective effect is not 100% guaranteed.
