Vitamin D supplements may help relieve painful symptoms of irritable bowel syndromeaccording to the results of thestudy published in the medical journal European Journal of Clinical Nutrition. however, there is a high prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in affected patients.
Researchers at the University of Sheffield in Britain carried out a meta-analysis of 7 studies to assess the benefits of vitamin D supplementation on the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. This poorly understood disease has a severe impact on patients’ quality of life, but there is no known cure.
Vitamin D for the well-being of patients
Although they say more research still needs to be done, the researchers suggest that supplements may help relieve symptoms like abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea and constipation. The vitamin D has been shown to bring benefits to the daily life of patients affected by irritable bowel syndrome.
“It is evident from the results that all people with irritable bowel syndrome should have their vitamin D levels tested and a large majority of them would benefit from supplements.
Vitamin D is essential for overall well-being, including bone health, immune function, mental health as well as gut health. Vitamin D insufficiency can be corrected relatively easily with supplements if diagnosed.
Low vitamin D levels have been linked to the risk of colorectal cancer and has been implicated in inflammatory bowel disease.
