Menopause, more commonly known as menopause, is a natural phase of a woman’s aging. It means that the menstrual cycle of the woman and also her fertility come to an end. During a woman’s fertile years, hormones like estrogen and progesterone produced in ascending and descending quantities to prepare the woman’s body for menstruation, conception and pregnancy.
When this repetitive release of hormones diminishes, menopause begins. Menopause is a naturally occurring process that begins around age 50, or as a result of removal of the ovaries at a younger age.
Some women experience few or no symptoms, others develop all kinds of complaints, ranging from mild to fairly severe. Some examples of menopausal symptoms: lack of monthly periods, dry vagina, hot flashes and mood swings.
Decreased estrogen levels make menopausal women more likely to develop osteoporosis and heart disease. Patients with such ailments should discuss with their doctor the pros and cons of replacing the missing hormones with drugs.
