For chronic back pain, certain medications can be injected into the painful area of the spine. These are spinal injections.
Bee chronic severe back pain can be used in the painful part of the vertebral column certain drugs are injected, as a means of diagnosis or treatment.
Spine injections can be given at various sites along the spine. Some injections aim to relieve severe back pain. Others aim to identify the source of back pain or spinal injury.
Such injections are administered into one of the spinal structures, such as the epidural space, intervertebral space, nerve root or facet joint. Painkillers are also injected during the treatment to relieve the injection pain. Often a steroid is also administered to reduce swelling and inflammation.
The medication can move freely through the spinal canal that covers the nerve roots and facet joints after administration. This makes the painful part of the body numb. If the pain subsides, this is confirmation that the source of pain has been identified.
