With the return of good weather, many parents have the reflex to cover their child’s stroller with a cloth to protect him from the sun. But, according to a video made by a stroller brand in late May, this is clearly a mistake that can be dangerous for the baby.
Do you usually cover your offspring’s stroller with a cloth to protect them from the sun? Bad idea: your baby is at risk of heat stroke. In order to demonstrate the harmfulness of this habit which many parents have as summer approaches, a Norwegian brand of strollers by the name of Babybanden made a video at the end of May showing two identical strollers, installed next to each other in direct sunlight with a thermometer. The first is covered with a cloth, as if to protect a baby, the second is not (there is no baby in the stroller).
A few minutes later, the stroller covered with the laundry is at almost 39 degrees while the other is at 33!
Conclusion: covering your baby’s stroller with a cloth to protect him from the sun has the opposite result. And this video has obviously caught the attention of more than one since it has been viewed 11 million times on Facebook since its publication on the Babybanden page.
A greenhouse effect
This is not the first time that specialists have challenged parents on the subject. In 2014, as Sweden suffered from unusual heat spikes, Svante Norgren, a pediatrician at Stockholm Children’s Hospital, spoke to the newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.
According to him, the technique of washing on the stroller would prevent air from passing through, exposing the child to a potential heat stroke. Due to this lack of air, “it is extremely hot in the stroller. This creates a furnace effect like in a greenhouse (…). Parents should always be aware of the risk of heat stroke by ensuring that their child is well hydrated and that the air circulates freely in the stroller “, he had detailed.
In order to verify his words, the journalist Frida Svensson who had interviewed him had carried out her own experiment. She had left two similar strollers in direct sunlight, covering, as in the BabyLanden video, one with a cloth and the other not. After 90 minutes, the temperature in the uncovered stroller was 22 degrees while the other reached 37 degrees, one more than the highest temperature ever in Stockholm.
Also, in order to best protect your child from the heat, we recommend that you invest in a parasol or an umbrella that you can attach to the stroller.
