We are beginning to know that stress is bad for your health. When it becomes chronic (that is to say: almost permanent), stress can promote the development of sleep disorders, dermatological problems or digestive disorders – among others.
Bad news: according to a new study from Yale University (in the United States), chronic stress could also be responsible for accelerated aging of the body.
Yes, stressed people have an organism that ages more quickly
To reach this (worrying) conclusion, the American researchers worked with a group of 444 volunteers, aged 19 to 50. They filled out questionnaires concerning their daily stress levels and their capacities for resilience; they also underwent blood samples to measure certain biological markers of aging.
Verdict? The American researchers found that people who were most stressed on a daily basis tended to have higher than average biological markers of aging – for example, they had significantly higher insulin resistance than other volunteers.
“Our work goes in the direction of the prejudice according to which the stressed people age more quickly than the othersanalyze the researchers who published their study in the specialized journal Translational Psychiatry. Giving importance to your mental health is therefore not only a psychological issue, it is also doing good to your body.“
