More than fifty women who ate this dish gave birth within 24 hours.
- Sold for $16, the burger has been around since 2019.
- Its benefits are probably a mere coincidence.
At the end of a pregnancy, childbirth is sometimes desired. Walking, cleaning, infusion or even acupuncture: there are dozens of grandmother’s tricks supposed to promote the onset of labor. In the United States, some women rely on their plate. They go to a restaurant in Minnesota to eat a burger, known for its ability to induce labor. Called “The Labor Inducer“, or the trigger of labor, the sandwich is composed of a pretzel bun, topped with beef, caramelized onions, mustard, honey bacon and a spicy Cajun remoulade sauce.
A coincidence… shared by more than 50 women
As of September 2, the owners of The Suburban restaurant, located in Excelsior, were delighted to have enabled 59 women to give birth thanks to their burger. All of them gave birth to their babies within 24 hours of eating this sandwich. The first to see its miraculous effects was Kelsey Quarberg, the restaurant’s co-owner. In April 2019, when she was ten days away from her term, she tested a new burger recipe prepared by the chef, created during the test for a local competition. “While we were taste testing the burgers as a sample, I liked it so much I asked our chef to make me another full size oneshe explained to TODAY Food. I said to myself, that at 38 weeks of pregnancy, I could have fun! About six hours later my contractions started“After a few hours, Samuel, her son, was born. Shortly after, when it came to choosing a name for this new burger, she didn’t hesitate for long.”We thought ‘The Labor Inducer’ was a cute name, but we didn’t think it would work on anyone else at all.“, she says. Except that another woman has the same experience, shortly after the burger’s arrival on the menu. “She didn’t know about the burger until she arrived at the restaurant, but she said she had to order it because it was her due date.continues Kelsey Quarberg. His work began at midnight the same evening.“The story was shared on the restaurant’s Instagram account and in local media, which made it popular, and made it known to many pregnant women.
No scientific evidence
There is no scientific evidence that this burger can speed up the onset of labor. According to Donnica Moore, a gynecologist interviewed by TODAY, there is no evidence that any food, herb or preparation promotes the onset of labour. But this is not the first time that a recipe has become popular for this reason: still in the United States, a salad and a dish of aubergine with parmigiana met the same fate as this sandwich. But beyond its success with pregnant women, the burger has proven itself in the famous local competition: it won third place.
