American scientists have found that excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages could promote the onset of type 2 diabetes.
- Excessive alcohol consumption can increase the risk of certain cancers and chronic diseases.
- Alcohol abuse could be a factor favoring the onset of type 2 diabetes.
- To prevent these risks, it is recommended to limit consumption to two drinks per day, and not to consume alcohol every day.
At high and repeated doses, alcohol can have serious health consequences. Excessive consumption can in particular increase the risks of certain cancers (mouth, throat, esophagus, colon-rectum, etc.) and chronic diseases (cirrhosis, cardiovascular disorders, high blood pressure, etc.). In a recent studyAmerican researchers observed a link between alcohol abuse and type 2 diabetes in middle-aged adults.
Higher glucose levels in heavy alcohol drinkers
In this research, scientists from the Cardiovascular Laboratory of Health at the University of Texas at Arlington (United States) recruited adults aged 50 to 64 and divided them into two groups. The first panel of volunteers was categorized as “heavy drinkers”, and the second as “non-drinkers”. They then took blood samples from the participants. The American team then found that excessive alcohol drinkers had higher fasting glucose levels compared to the second group. These results could suggest that ““Excessive alcohol consumption may have negative effects on glucose regulation in older populations”noted the researchers.
“Our team recommends not drinking every day”
Alcohol consumption can impair kidney or liver functions, but no significant difference was observed between the two panels of volunteers during this work. “Alcohol consumption in excess of recommended limits causes damage to organs throughout the body and increases not only the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, but also other diseases (…) Our team recommends not drinking all days”, however warned Chueh-Lung “Laura” Hwang, lead author of the study and cardiopulmonary physiotherapist. These results will soon be presented during of the American Physiology Summit in Long Beach (United States).
According to the instructions of Public health Franceit is recommended to drink a maximum of two glasses per day, and not to consume alcohol every day, to preserve your health.
