A recent study highlights the health benefits of a soy-based powdered drink mix, flavored with cocoa and enriched with edible bird’s nest hydrolysates.
- Malaysian researchers have developed a mixture of powdered drinks made from soy and hydrolysates of edible bird’s nests, Aerodramus fuciphagus; all flavored with cocoa.
- After drinking the beverage, participants showed improved angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitory activity and red blood cell membrane stabilization, both linked to antihypertensive and anti-inflammatory effects.
- The drink is also characterized by a low glycemic index and prolonged satiety, making it particularly effective in managing blood sugar and appetite.
Edible bird’s nest hydrolysates are renowned for their “bioactive properties”. In new research, published in the journal Food Quality and Safetyresearchers at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (Malaysia) wanted to determine their contributing functional effect as an ingredient in a health drink.
The drink has anti-hypertensive, anti-inflammatory, glycemic and satietogenic properties.
To carry out the study, they developed a drink mixture containing 75% soy powder, 20% cocoa powder and 3% edible bird’s nest hydrolyzate powder, Aerodramus fuciphagus. Then, volunteers had to drink the mixture. “The functional effect of the product with respect to in vitro angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitory activity (related to vascular health) and membrane stabilizing activity of human red blood cells was evaluated using its aqueous extract The impact on blood sugar and satiety was evaluated on 12 and 30 people, respectively, who consumed 250 ml of the product, containing 25 g of carbohydrates. available”, the team said.
The tested drink was found to be beneficial for health. Indeed, according to the results, it leads to better in vitro inhibitory activity of the angiotensin converting enzyme, which suggests an antihypertensive potential by blocking compounds that increase blood pressure. The beverage also demonstrated a low glycemic index, helping to maintain the stability of postprandial blood sugar levels (i.e. after meals). With 3% edible bird’s nest hydrolysates, the blend has notable antioxidant effects that help stabilize red blood cells and reduce inflammation, which is essential for the management of hypertension and diabetes. Additionally, participants reported feeling full for up to 2.5 hours after consuming the drink, thanks to its high protein and fiber content.
Diabetes, hypertension: the addition of edible bird’s nest hydrolysates, “an effective dietary option”
“Incorporating edible bird’s nest hydrolysates into powdered drink mixes offers a new way to enhance daily nutrition through bioactive benefits. This fortified, low-calorie drink mix could provide a dietary option effective for people who need to treat their hypertension and diabetes, or for anyone looking for sustained energy and satiety. Our results support the growing interest in functional foods that address hunger while promoting better health outcomes. health”, concluded Zalifah Mohd Kasimmain author of the work.
