A study published in BMC Medicine shows that swallowing a small amount of yogurt per day can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by five.
Clearly, dairy products are truly “our lifelong friends”. A new study has just demonstrated one of the unexpected benefits of yogurts: they prevent the risk of diabetes. Two teaspoons alone (28 grams) would reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by five.
To reach this astonishing conclusion, the researchers of the Harvard School of Public Health crossed the data of three large studies, that is to say nearly 200,000 subjects who, during thirty years, provided regular information on their diet. At the start of the studies, all were healthy; in the end, some 15,000 people had developed diabetes.
Yogurt bacteria
The researchers also compared the results with other studies, involving more than one million subjects in all. By analyzing this huge database, they concluded that daily intake of yogurt was associated with an 18% reduction in the risk of developing diabetes. Effect that neither cheese nor milk produce.
Researchers believe that the bacteria in yoghurt helps the metabolism to maintain a balance. They are also used to enrich the intestinal flora. However, many studies have shown that people whose intestinal flora is poor in bacteria have a greater risk of developing diseases linked to obesity, including type 2 diabetes.
