An intern at the Marseille hospital suffers from several fractures and an intracranial hemorrhage. The security conditions are singled out.
Interns at the Timone hospital (Marseille) are worried about the security conditions in which they are housed, within the establishment. Two women were indeed attacked on Sunday July 9, at the end of the afternoon, by an individual from outside.
The attacker attacked a first woman “violently jostled by the young man, and who managed to escape him”, reports the Public Assistance-Hospitals of Marseille (AP-HM) in a press release published on Tuesday. The victim was able to take refuge in a building.
Attempted rape
But this failure did not stop the individual. He attacked a second intern who had come down to take out her trash. He followed her into the building, hit her in the face, and allegedly tried to rape her, according to the Autonomous Syndicate of Hospitals of Marseille. “The victim suffers, in addition to the psychological trauma, from multiple wounds of the face, fractures of the bones of the skull and an intracranial hemorrhage”, he specifies on his Facebook page.
Fortunately, she was able to take refuge with the head of the boarding school, Isabelle Chang. Quickly informed, the security services of the hospital intervened, but the attacker had fled. Police conducted an investigation, which resulted in the arrest of the suspect on Monday.
Free entry
The various AP-HM officials strongly condemned this attack and provided support to the victims. But the incident does not pass, on the side of the interns. They demand that the door to the boarding school, which has not been closed for months, be repaired.
An email re-formulating this request had notably been sent the week before the attack, said Isabelle Chang on franceinfo. “We were always told that there was not enough budget to repair this door, that it broke too often and that it was too expensive to repair it,” she added.
It is indeed possible to enter the student building without hindrance. Interns regularly meet homeless people, patients or other people in their stairwell.
Promises of reinforcement
To overcome this security breach, the management of the AP-HM dispatched a security guard to monitor the entrance to the boarding school. It has been in place since July 10. This late action has the merit of reassuring the students, many of whom had said they were ready to move. Already before the events, some were reluctant to stay and sleep, and an intern had left the residence, fearing for her safety.
It will be reinforced, promise officials of the AP-HM. A meeting concerning the progress of the work (vigil, door, video surveillance) is to be held this Wednesday.
