April 30, 2019.
The arrival of sunny days unfortunately coincides with that of mosquitoes … And among them, tiger mosquitoes, vectors of potentially serious diseases, and present today in more than half of French territory.
Tiger mosquitoes: 51 departments in red vigilance
On April 26, the Ministry of Solidarity and Health published the tiger mosquito attendance card in France. And this year again, the tiger mosquito continues to proliferate in the departments of the North: ” Nine new departments in red vigilance for the tiger mosquito and mosquitoes already present in 53 departments ! », Announces the site Mosquito vigilance.
51 departments are placed in red vigilance : Charente-Maritime, Côte-d’Or, Loire, Nièvre, Puy-de-Dôme, Paris, Seine-et-Marne, Essonne and Seine-Saint-Denis thus join the 42 departments in which the tiger mosquito was already established and active in 2018, namely Hauts-de-Seine, Aisne, Hautes-Alpes, Hautes-Pyrénées, Ariège, Lozère, Indre, Maine-et-Loire, Corrèze, Val-de-Marne, Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin, Vendée, Saône-et-Loire, Rhône, Ain, Isère, Savoie, Alpes de Haute-Provence, Var, Alpes-Maritimes, Haute-Corse, Corse-du-Sud, Drôme, Vaucluse, Bouches-du-Rhône, Ardèche, Gard, Hérault, Aveyron, Tarn, Aude, Pyrénées-Orientales, Haute-Garonne, Tarn-et-Garonne, Lot, Dordogne, Lot-et-Garonne, Gers, Gironde, Landes, Pyrénées-Atlantiques.
The tiger mosquito can transmit serious diseases
If we fear mosquito bites especially for the itching, the tiger mosquito, native to Asia, is particularly hunted because of the serious diseases it can transmit. It is mainly about dengue, chikungunya and zika virus. The first cases of indigenous contamination, in metropolitan France, appeared in 2010 and since then, several dozen cases have been counted.
The risk is not to be taken lightly and the authorities point out that ” once installed in a town or a department, it is practically impossible to get rid of it “. In the most affected departments, mosquito control operations are implemented by “public mosquito control operators”, but the site Mosquito vigilance recommends to ” take care not to leave stagnant water in its immediate environment, know how to identify a tiger mosquito, report suspected cases and, in general, report any unusual proliferation of mosquitoes “.
