Chinese science fiction writer Cixin Liu’s most popular novel, 三体 (Three Body Problem), is now being made into what experts call the darkest science fiction series ever. What awaits us?
Dark Forest Hypothesis Leading in Three Body Problem
In the fictional universe of Cixin Liu, aliens are not the humanoid creatures from Star Trek or Star Wars, but sinister, unfathomable creatures. A well-known question is: If intelligent extraterrestrial life exists, why isn’t it here?
In Three Body Problem, Cixin Liu opts for the rather dismal Dark Forest hypothesis. This implies that aliens are very afraid of each other and therefore hide to prevent another alien race from attempting to exterminate them.
Three Body Problem, sinister plot with happy ending
In The Three Body Problem, Liu creates a dark setting in which a secret society of misogynists has formed a sinister alliance with aliens from the planet Trisolaris. The goal: to put an end to humanity. There is also a somewhat softer faction, who only want humanity to be re-educated and dominated by the aliens.
Fortunately it all ends well. But of course there is also the devil in the tail here…
Directed by the same team behind Game of Thrones
Screenwriters often take the necessary artistic freedom to deviate from the story of the novel they are helping to film. So it’s just as exciting Is it really going to end like the novel?
The creators of this new series are the same creators who also directed Game of Thrones. Netflix probably hopes to repeat this success with The Three Body Problem. That will be difficult though. The series should be released in 2023.
Meanwhile, in China Tencent is also busy filming this novel. Fans of the book are discussing online which version will be better.
Netflix is being rather secretive about the series, but the Chinese competition has already released a spectacular trailer.
